WOW (Women on Writing) Blog Book Tour for Rina Z. Neiman’s “Born Under Fire”

Guest Post :

Music plays a big role in my book, Born Under Fire, and goes to the core of the main character. When I was putting the finishing touches onto the manuscript, a friend asked if there was a way to hear the music mentioned in my book. She told me about a photography book that had a companion smartphone app. When you held your phone up to the icon in the book, a video about the subject played.

That got me thinking. Wouldn’t it be cool if I wrote:

“What is it?” she asks. “What is it? It’s the score for the debut concert of the Palestine Orchestra,” he replies as he points at a line. Rachel gasps. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream!” she says.

…and you could hear the actual recording of that orchestra from 1936. I searched YouTube and found Toscanini conducts Palestine Symphony Orchestra 1936 (rare audio fragment).

Creating an app on my self-published book budget was not an option, but using QR codes was.

What’s a QR code?

A QR code is one of those black and white bar coded squares you see on bus stop posters and in museum exhibits that say SCAN ME!

What’s bad about a QR code, is it’s kind of ugly. What’s great about a QR code, is when scanned using a QR code reader app on a smart phone, it will take the user directly to a website. There are many free QR code generators online. Plug in the URL you want to link to and the generator makes your unique QR code. Download the QR code and insert into manuscript!

I made a list of all the music and historical events that I’d want to attach an audio or video cue to, and searched. In the end, I came up with a list of 25 videos that I linked to via QR codes.

But how to insert them? I didn’t want them to be intrusive to the reader. In the end, I decided to use the footnote approach, that way if someone wanted to ignore them, they could. And if someone was interested then they could delve deeper into the material online.

For a list of QR code links in Born Under Fire, click here. Or SCAN ME!

Our Interview:

Q: What made you choose this subject matter?

A:  The main character in Born Under Fire is based on my mother, Shulamith Dubno Neiman, who was born in Tel Aviv in 1928. Unfortunately, she died when I was eleven years old and there were so many questions about her life that were never answered. When I uncovered her belongings after my father’s death years later, I found photographs and documents that I had never seen before. Most significantly, I found a sketch book that her late-brother wrote and illustrated about a trip they took to the Galilee in 1947. This was the uncle we never met but knew was her best friend. For the first time, I had a view into their relationship. It was also a snapshot of what life was like for this first generation of modern day Israelis. The story of their relationship and of the history of the Sabra generation compelled me to write this book.

Q: What made you choose writing as a profession?

A: I had stories that I wanted to tell and found that writing was the way I could best convey this one. Writing has always been part of my work, and as a PR professional I had a years of experience with the crafting of descriptions and compelling narratives. Once I found the book that my late-uncle created, I knew I had a story worth my time and energy. It has given me so much and so many levels.

Q: Do you have any advice for future writers? Especially women?

A: Here’s my two-cents:

Take classes in writing. Learn the craft.
Create a timeline with an outline. That’s your path.
Find a writing group with other women writers. In Adair Lara’s book Naked, Drunk, and Writing, she talks of howimportant it is for women to find a supportive writing group. By nature, women want community and connection and, although we need quiet time to write, we can do it around other women (and that’s okay!).
Polish your final piece. Use an editor! Make it as professional as you can. Spelling, grammar, punctuation – you need to check it all.
Write THE END. Are you sure? Better check it one more time…
Network with other writers, writing groups and organizations that may have an interest in your work. Self-marketing is part of the publishing world now. The best way to create interest in your story is to find like-minded people, and promote to those you are connected with. Move out from there.

Q: Use this space to give yourself a shameless plug about this work/any other works/your website(blog)?

A: The most rewarding part of this project is hearing how the story touches people. It was important to me to not only capture the place and time, but the spirit of the people and the city of Tel Aviv, where most of the book takes place. The website that I built (www.bornunderfire.com) has photos from my mother’s collection, links to historical documents and books that I used in my research, as well as my video promo that gives some context to my journey with this story. I’ve done several talks to middle schools and other organizations that have been very successful. Born Under Fire is now available to purchase on AmazonBarnes and Noble, and Thrift Books.

AND here’s MY shameless plug for my radio show Eclectic Weekends on Stationhead.
